Iconic Petitcodiac Church to be Demolished

An iconic feature of the Petitcodiac landscape is being demolished. The original and oldest parts of the more than 135 year-old Petitcodiac Baptist Church and it’s towering white spire will soon be torn down. Earlier this year a over 14-thousand litres of oil leaked into the oldest parts of the church, which dates back to 1879. Over one hundred church committee members had to make the difficult decision to demolish the historical part of the church after an assessment showed it would cost 700-thousand-dollars to salvage. That same assessment also revealed structural issues in the church, including the old Bell tower. Work to demolish the church and clean up the oil spill is set to begin this week.
